FUNK D!!!

YES YES FUCKING YES!!!!  In Funk D's own words, "Made this one after one of my greatest shows in Portugal! It was absolutely F****** AMAZING and I really wanted to make some moombahton afterwards in the airplane."  This track is BONKERS!!!  It's amazing how dubstep noises sound so much better in moombahton songs haha.  Enjoy!

LITTLE BIRD

Check this out!  Disfunktion deliver an absolutely wonderful bootleg right here.  Annie Lennox always delivers great vocals, and the boys of Disfunktion came up with a great Axwell-style melody to go along on the main beat.  It's awesome, and you are sure to enjoy it!

HYPNOTOAD

Hey guys.  Sorry it's been a while since my last post.  I have a couple of songs I'm really trying to get finished and I've been working on them like crazy!  In the meantime here is my newest song "Hypnotoad"!  It's another tech house track with a fat, groovy bassline and a bunch of shuffling percussion.  Any fans of the show Futurama are sure to enjoy the sample I used too.  Check it out and spread the word!!

GUCCI GUCCI

Hot damn!  ReepR got serious on this track.  Enjoy!

MIXTAPE

This is a mixtape I did back in like June that I never really gave much promotion too, but then I listened to it in my car today and decided to share it again.  I'll confess the first like 3 tracks are kind of "eh", but right around 12:00 this shit picks up HARD and stays hard the rest of the way.  I have to say that listening to this again has made me want to spend the first few days of my winter break doing a new mix tape since I've taken this massive break from anything DJ related to just produce.  The Kids Want House Vol. 7, here I come!
No tracklist, just listen.

TITANIUM

This remix is sooooooooooo dope.  I can't possibly listen to any other version of this track after hearing this remix.  Even the dubstep part during the break is awesome.  It all just works.  The main beat is some really bonkers electro too.  Plenty of blips and bleeps and interesting rhythms to keep the track fun and exciting throughout.  For those of you unfamiliar with Cazzette, they are a young Swedish duo and part of the same At Night Management group that represents Avicii and Tom Hangs.  They've also done remixes of Avicii's smash hits "Seek Bromance" and "Sweet Dreams" as well as Spencer & Hill's "Believe It".  Hope you like this one as much as I do, and check out the FULL SET OF REMIXES over at Beatport!

AGAIN LIKE JAGGER

I came across this wonderful mash-up today of Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" with Basto's "Again and Again".  I have to say I'd really like to hear Adam Levine's voice on more house tracks.  It really works.  I'm not gonna say much more because I'm tired as hell but found myself just laying in bed unable to sleep but I'm gonna lay down and try again.  Goodnight everyone and enjoy!

MERHBOD MASHUPS

California DJ/Producer just sent me a bunch of mashups he did and man are they fucking fire.  My favorite one is "Wonderwall Groove 2night" which combines the vocals of Oasis with beats melodies from Eric Prydz and Anthony Louis.  The result is pretty fucking fantastic, creating unique track that's greater than the sum of its parts.  Another real gem in this set of tracks is the mashup of Wolfgang Gartner's "The Way It Was" with Rebecca & Fiona's "Luminary Ones".  Most of WG's tracks couldn't really work with vocals, but these two are great compliments.  Check out all the mashups below, and show Mehrbod some love on his Soundcloud and Facebook pages!

BIG FUCKING BOOTLEG

Dada Life vs Caveat vs Alesso - Pressure Violence (Huge Euge Is Taking Self-Defense Classes Bootleg) by HugeEuge23

My buddy Eugene put together this bootleg and it is one serious monster. Eugene, known by his DJ/production name Huge Euge, is working on big things and be sure to keep an eye out for more of his tracks in the future!

AROUND THE WORLD REMIXES

Earlier this year, trance artist Arty released his monster anthem "Around the World" and now we have a nice pack of remixes to go with it. My absolute favorite is the one previewed above from Two Pearls Rock and Sven Kirchof, which bridges the gap between trance and big room electro house. It's simply fantastic. Now for the other remixes. Tocadisco comes in on this one with a groovy progressive tech tune that still incorporates the wonderful melody of the original. Another great one comes from Tonka, whose Afro-Trance Remix puts a wonderfully distinct and original Latin feel on the whole thing. I've really never heard anything quite like it. You can check out the FULL REMIX PACK over at Beatport. Trust me it's worth your taking a listen. Enjoy!

GIN WIGMORE

I'm going to take a step aside from dance music here and share a song that I only discovered thanks to a Loews commercial on TV. The artist is Gin Wigmore, and I think she's pretty great. Her voice is smooth and soulful with just the right amount of raspiness to it. This particular song is light and upbeat with a bouncy little piano giving it a good foundation. Hailing from New Zealand where she's already a star, she's on the rise here in the states thanks in large part to this song, even though it was first released back in 2009. Check out some more of Gin's song on iTunes and show her some support!

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT

So this track is absolutely fantastic. Adrian Lux and Blende completely reimagined what was a chilled out, funky vocal house track into a twisted electro monster. The kick drum thumps, the bassline lines pulses, and anyone with a heartbeat can only try to resist dancing. This was released just two days ago on Beatport along with a whole slew of other remixes from names like Hirshee, who puts a dubstep twist on it, and Rainer Weichhold, who gives it a whole lot of techy groove. Take a listen, and check out the FULL RELEASE to grab yourself a copy!

KOREA (GREG ARMANO REMIX)

Greg Armano just sent me this great remix he did of a familiar track from a familiar face - Aron Scott's "Korea". It's a real banger. Great progressive electro beat with excellent use of the vocals. Check it out and enjoy!

INTERVIEW WITH DJ ECO

Hey guys. Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but I've been crazy busy producing new original music. Anyways, here is an exclusive interview I did with upcoming trance artist DJ Eco. He's a local guy from NJ that I met a couple of years back at the first Electric Zoo, and when I hung out with him again at this year's festival he agreed to do this little interview for you all. He's a cool guy with some good insights, and you should definitely keep your eyes and ears open for him in the future.

1) Let's start with some basic info. Tell my readers who you are, where you're from, how long you've been in the scene, etc.
My name is Marcello, my artist name is Eco and I'm a trance and progressive producer/DJ from New Jersey. I've been listening to the genre for almost a decade now and have been producing my own music for a good 7 years or so, maybe more!

2) What draws you to uniquely to trance that you don't find in other forms of music? Describe what you think makes it special.
Feeling! I am drawn to all types of music that have some thought and feelings and emotion in it. What's unique is that trance is music you dance to. While I like a lot of progressive rock bands and producers, maybe the live experience of hearing them live is kind of a quiet one, people sitting down or nodding their heads. At a really good trance event with a really good trance DJ playing, you can really get sucked into a whole series of emotions, all while really dancing energetically.

3) Tell me a bit about your creative process in production. Where do you typically draw inspiration from, and how do you go about designing a track once you've got the concept?
I listen to a lot of rock bands and more ambient chillout producers as well. I don't listen to too much other trance these days so the inspiration I do draw from is from the rock bands I listen to. What usually forms in my mind is a melody and the main melody is usually the first thing I start producing around. The beats and percussions of the song usually come after!

4) Producing vs. DJ'ing. Which do you find to be more rewarding and why?
Producing! I think flying around every night and playing a lot of other people's songs for a living can only be rewarding to a certain extent. For it to really mean something, I think the producer factor is really necessary. It's incredible to see a crowd's reaction to your own song(s). And that can all be traced to the moment you were sitting down in your chair and putting all the music in your head onto your screen.

5) What led you to realize that you wanted to make a career out of music? What was the transition like from being a casual fan to becoming a professional and one of NYC's brightest upcoming artists?
Funny question, because I still don't consider this a "career". I work about 5 days a week doing architecture, partly by necessity but also by choice. It's stressful as hell but helps me be a better producer as well. Maybe when it picks up to an more enormous degree, I might consider myself "professional"! It's more fun doing this for fun though haha..

6) When we were hanging out at E-Zoo, a bunch of people recognized you even though you weren't performing and came up to say hello. Is being recognized by complete strangers something you ever really get used to?
I've gotten used to it. I'm a bit of a shy guy so I try to steer clear of it when I can. When I see DJs, I might just hang out in the back or in a dark corner. But it's quite amazing how many people recognize me, from all over the world. I may not be packing out clubs all over the world, but at least I know my music made its way all over the world. It's an amazing feeling!

7) What are your thoughts on the recent production trend of people making full tracks using only samples and loops like from the Vengeance packs? Do you think this is ok or do you think producers should make more effort to create their own sounds? (I asked Aron Scott this same question lol)
I think it's okay, depending on a certain degree. Percussion samples are a good basis to start your productions on, and using some of them here and there give your tracks some sort of skeleton to grow around. I would never advocate using loops as melodies, vocals, or basslines though. I think those things should all be made from scratch. On the flip side, there's some popular producers NOT using samples and making everything by scratch. But who cares, if their music sucks? If you're writing incredible songs with great melodies and cool vocals, using a few samples to back your track (to a light degree) doesn't kill your credibility as an artist, in my opinion.

8) Who are some of your role models as an artist? Ya know the kind of people you aspire to be like as your career progresses.
I have to say I really respect Ferry Corsten as a producer. He has risen to the top and stayed extremely popular throughout the past two decades. He's done so by continuing to "do his own thing". He never completely reinvented himself (except at the very very beginning) by trying to conform to whatever was hot at the moment. He just kind of stayed the course and you can tell a Ferry Corsten song is a Ferry Corsten by the way it sounds. Too many big DJs go out, pay another producer, and tell him to "make whatever's hot at the moment with 1 or 2 of my classic sounds". That's what's killing the genre.

9) What songs, if any, have you heard that made you stop and think "Damn! I wish I made that track myself."?
"Halcyon And On And On..." by Orbital!

10) What upcoming projects and gigs of yours should we be on the lookout for? Anything recently released that we should check out?
I've been working on a lot of new stuff since the release of the album. Early 2012 is going to be really exciting, I'm really trying to put out a few big-room tunes out again, similar to my older stuff! They do have a new twist to them though and I think they're a really exciting step in the right direction.

11) Lastly, say anything at all that you'd like to my blog readers.
Don't let DJ Mag dictate what artists you listen to or go see. Dig further and you'll find amazing artists who aren't on the DJ Mag poll and will probably never make it to the DJ Mag poll! Give them your support.

DJ Eco latest track "Wide Open", a collaboration with artist Breakfast, was just recently released on Armada records and is currently available on Beatport! Check out the release here and stay tuned for more from this guy rapidly rising in the ranks of the trance community!

LEVELS (FUNK D BOOTLEG)

So by now everyone and their mother (and their father, their aunts & uncles, their grandparents, and their pet dog/cat/fish) has heard Avicii's monster hit "Levels". It's lead melody is just too damn poppy and happy to possibly resist. Even as someone who usually dislikes songs on the high commercial end of the spectrum, I love that song for it's pure pop music genius and undeniable lively spirit. Unfortunately, too much of a good thing is always bad, and "Levels" is on that brink. That brings my attention now to this bootleg. Familiar Dutch artist Funk D twists "Levels" on its head and brings it down to a dark progressive track with some typical Dutch-style tribal percussion parsed with only brief moments of the original's pop melody. It's an awesome change of pace for those getting sick of the original, and even those who never liked "Levels" to begin with would do well to give this track a listen. Seriously, it's bangin'. Haha. To download the track you have to go on Funk D's Facebook page and click the "Like" button. Then go to the "Bandpage" section, find the track in the music player, and you can download it from there. Sorry if that seems kind of roundabout, but that's how Funk D wants this promoted and I need to respect that. Enjoy and check out the rest of Funk D's stuff on his pages!

TOMMY TRASH

Tommy Trash has been on quite a tear recently with big tracks like "The End" and now his new remix of Moby's "After". The native of Sydney, Australia gives a unique blend of groove, bass, and bleeps to his tracks that makes them such monsters. Here we have a nice little mash-up from Tujamo that pits "The End" against "Babylon" by Congorock with a solid result. The songs compliment well and you're sure to enjoy it.

DON'T WANNA GO HOME

Bassanova & Moradzo have teamed up once again to bring us their usual dirty dutchness. This time they took on Jason Derulo's "Don't Wanna Go Home" and delivered hard. The vocals are well incorporated and the beat is big, fat, bass-heavy, and a guaranteed dancefloor killer. To be honest I've never even heard the original song haha but this bootleg is just dope as hell. Enjoy! Jason Derulo - Don't Wanna Go Home (Bassanova & Moradzo Bootleg)

DITSJZ

Earlier this month Toolroom Records put out its new compilation 'Amsterdam 2011' which includes this filthy filthy banger from Koen Groeneveld. It's got very techy bass and percussion with some crazy lead on the main beat that I can't really describe haha. The rest of the compilation is excellent as well. Here are some of the other names featured on the compilation: Mark Knight, John Dalhback, Alex Kenji, Stefano Noferini, Thomas Gold. The Alex Kenji track "Nine Apples" is particularly good. Very funky, classic house. So take a listen to "Ditsjz" above, and then grab yourself a copy of the FULL RELEASE cuz it's a monster.

THE PRO-STITUTE BOOTLEGS

Those of you familiar with 90s one-hit wonders will recognize this bootleg by The Pro-Stitute. For everyone else Snow was a white rapper from Canada who somehow had a Jamaican accent and he had one song that somehow got popular called "Informer". You'll like this bootleg though. It's got a strong kick with a big main beat. There are two other bootlegs here too that you should also enjoy. One is a chilled out moombahton version Sean Paul's "Got 2 Luv U" that's pretty nice but not the typical crazy style of moombahton. Good change of pace. Enjoy folks!

GREG ARMANO

Hey everyone. French producer/DJ Greg Armano sent me an email, and asked me to check out his tracks to share with you. I really like this remix he did of Katy Perry with a heavy dirty electro bassline and good use of the original's vocals. Take a listen and check out the rest of Greg's song over on Soundcloud where he's made them all available to download for free!
